THE ACCIDENTAL SURFACE
Beneath the Surface
Beneath the Surface did not begin with water.
The original idea was to place a transparent barrier between the model and the camera — a boundary that could be seen through, but not crossed. A space of mutual inaccessibility.
During one of the sessions, Frida looked towards the light and reached upwards. Together with the reflections and distortions in the material, the image suddenly evoked someone beneath the surface of water, reaching towards what lies above.
That moment changed the direction of the work.
The barrier became a surface. What had been a physical separation became something more ambiguous — a boundary between states, between what is visible and what remains beyond reach.
An idea may give me a reason to begin. The photograph often tells me where to go next.
